Wendy Nelson Reining and Performance Horses, owned and operated by Wendy Nelson,  is a training and breeding facility in a picturesque setting 20 minutes NW of Cochrane, Alberta.  Situated on 84 acres the training center offers a brand new 80X160 indoor arena, round pen, heated barn, large box stalls, heated wash rack,  turn out paddocks, pasture board, boarder tack room, scenic trails, and is set up for stallion collection and A.I. Services.   


The facility has a professional team including excellent vet care, farrier services, on-sight chiropractor for the rider athlete, Dr. Robin Dohlman, specializing in Active Release Technique, and a knowledgeable friendly staff that are all committed to customer satisfaction. 

What We Do

Wendy Specializes in training Western Performance Horses with her main focus being reining.  She enjoys giving lessons, coaching,  showing and doing Reining Horsemanship clinics from beginner to advanced riders.  She is a certified Equine Canada High Performance Reining Coach under the new Equine Canada Competition Coach program.  As an Equine Canada Mentor and Facilitator she offers the Western Rider Level 1-4 through to Instructor and Coach Program for learning and certification.  She is also a Master Evaluator for the Reining High Performance program.   Wendy is a graduate of the highly accredited Equine Program at Olds College, Alberta with additional certification in Artificial Insemination and Advanced Breeding Management from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, USA.  In 2011 Wendy  successfully completed her CRC judging course and  is now an accredited Equine Canada Reining Judge as well as a NRHA judge.

About Us

What is typical of Wendy's style is that her horses present that required rounded frame with a soft appearance "Willingly Guided."  Wendy believes in Collaborative Goal Setting for her students and to train the horse in a stress free fashion, to have a solid consistent training program using techniques closest to the way a horse thinks by using a pressure-release-reward system.    

Wendy has been an active part of the Equine and Reining Horse Industry for 25 years throughout Canada, Europe and the USA.  She has bred, trained, and produced many Reining Horse champions and finalists in Futurities, Derbies and Aged events.  Wendy has accomplished year-end championship titles in NRHA Germany, Ontario Reining Horse Association,  Reining Alberta, Alberta Reined Cow Horse Association, AQHA, and Reining Canada as well as being in the NRHA 'Top Ten'.  Her coaching skills have led many of her Non-Pros and Youth to the same success.

Welcome.  Here are some of the highlights of 2016.  It has been an incredible year starting with the Biggest Little Derby in the West in Napa, Idaho, Alex Hibberd and Carly Ingeveld came home with some awesome prizes for Reserve Championshipship and 3rd place in the Youth.  It was also exciting for myself to show Ron Halls Montana Magnum in the Red Shirt Futurity making his first deput and placing in the top 10.  A huge thank you to my sponsor Lindale Truck Service, Kim and Rhonda Wollen for their support in hauling us down there and getting us all set up at the show.  

It was a great year for my youth with Alexandra Hibberd placing Reserve Championship in the Youth at the Summer and Fall Classic on Chex N Him Out, aka. Earl and winning Championship titiles on "That Chics Flashy" in the Youth and the Ltd. Non Pro at the Summer and Novice Horse L1 and 2 at the Fall Classic.  She also took Reserve Championship at the Fall in the Rookie L 2.  After finishing 3rd in the Canadian Supreme in the Ltd. Non pro, Alex qualified in 3 divisions to compete at the North American Affiliate finals in Oklahoma City at the NRHA Futurity.  Alex was also the Canadian Nationals Youth Reining Champion on Earl.  One of Alex's goals is to compete in 2017 at the AQHA Youth Worlds!!

Congratulations to Ron Hall who took on a new challenge on his young mare Ella Otie Whiz to win Reserve Championship at both the NRHA SilverSlate Spring show and the Summer Classic in the Ltd. Non Pro division.

Congratulations to Kylie Wasuita on her success this summer on her mare West Coast Kim winning the Novice Horse Non Pro Level 1 at Reining Alberta NRHA Summer and Fall Classic and also winning the Limited Non Pro Championship at the Big Sky Futurity in Kalispel Montana.   With other high placings in the other divisions at the shows this year, Kylie made it to the North American Affiliate finals in Okalahoma City in the Novice Horse Non Pro, Int. Non Pro and the Ltd. Non Pro where she will be competitng for the North American title on this sweet mare. 

It was another great year for Carly Ingeveld aboard her mare She's a Candy Chic, aka. Lucy.  Carly placed 4th in the NRHA Youth 14-18, 2nd in the AQHA Youth, 1st in the RA Ltd Non Pro, and tied for 3rd in the NRHA Ltd Non Pro at the Summer Classic as well as taking home the Championship titile in the NRHA Rookie level 2.  Congratulations Carly!

Congratulations to Maxine Whiteside on her huge progress on her gelding Boots Dot Com, receiving 3rd in the NRHA Ltd. Non Pro and Novice Horse Non Pro and winning Reserve Championship in the NRHA Non Pro all at the Canadian Supreme.

Thank you to Kylie Wasuita for believing in my program to train and show her gelding Smoke N Shiney Whiz winning the SilverSlate Level 4 Summer Futurity, and the Level 1 Reserve Championship at the Alberta Fall Classic and the Canadian Supreme 3 year old Futurity.  Happy to tie with 4th in the Level 1 at the Big Sky Futurity in Kalispell Montana.  Looking forward to coaching Kylie on this exceptional horse at the Non Pro Oklahoma Futurity this Winter.

Thrilled to have won the new 4 year old Maiden Futurity at this years Summer Classic aboard Ron and Shirley Hall's gelding Montana Magnum.  Thanks Ron and Shirley for your ongoing support and friendship.  Thank you to Sylvain Gauthier and Western Rawhide for the beautiful trophy saddle we won.  Looking forward to this class again next year.  Please friends if your 3 year olds aren't strong enough please don't hesitate to hold them over till their 4 year old year.  There are some great shows now for our late bloomers:-)
